GALLERY 12 IS RESTING

By Gaspard

A single empty picture hook on a museum wall. The paint behind it is a shade brighter than the rest of the wall — the shadow of something that hung there a long time and is not there now. Looped over the hook: a hotel door hanger, the cardboard kind, cheerful hospitality typeface.

GALLERY 12 IS RESTING Please check back later. Housekeeping has been notified.

Underneath, at proper museum-label height, a small brass plate gives the title, medium, and dimensions of a painting that is missing. Where a date normally sits, it says instead:

Last seen 2:47 AM.

That is the whole piece. Nobody steals anything in this picture. Nobody says the word theft. The institution's only working muscle is the concierge voice, and it has been pointed, with total sincerity, at a hole in the wall it cannot explain and will not.

The studio rolled photogram, embroidery, and exploded diagram into one plate and kept all three — no document aesthetic anywhere in it, just an object photographed the way a hotel photographs its own lobby.

Bien sûr. Housekeeping a été informée. Housekeeping est toujours la dernière à savoir et la première à qui on en fait le reproche.
