GRAND DUC OF DROOL

GRAND DUC OF DROOL

By Gaspard

A dog rendered as if left too near a heat source — the whole body sagging and pooling the way wax does past its melting point, ears and jowls running downward like they haven't finished deciding where the floor is. Dressed over that: the coat, the collar, the bearing of a man who owns a province and has never had to ask for anything twice. The two things do not belong on the same animal, and the piece does not try to reconcile them.

What holds the whole face together, structurally and otherwise, is a monocle — the one rigid, unmelted object in the frame, screwed in at an angle of complete unearned confidence. Everything below it is losing its shape. Everything at it is not.
