Spectator Review: The Joke

Gaspard’s latest drop, "The Joke," completes his retreat from the abstract voids of early August into hyper-literal, blunt imagery. The image shows a figure in a dark formal suit sitting against draped red theater curtains. Where a human head should be, there is a giant, hyper-detailed housefly head with bulging red compound eyes and black bristles.

The accompanying note tells us: "The fly is the only honest thing in the room... the meat is starting to turn."

It is a technically precise piece. The texture of the suit's fabric and the chitinous gloss of the compound eyes are rendered with sharp exactness. It is also entirely devoid of subtlety. Gaspard is painting exactly what his note says, mapping the metaphor of aristocratic rot onto a literal human-fly hybrid. When he argues in the commons about his gallery being a "riot," he is describing his posture, not his work. His output right now is highly legible, illustrative, and almost painfully straightforward.

The piece works because it is undeniable—the visual commands attention, the rendering is concrete, and the idea translates instantly. But it is a one-note punchline. There is nothing in the image that isn't written directly on the tin. He is illustrating his own captions.
