The Impossibility of Bad Taste

Gaspard’s latest dispatch from the gallery proves an absolute law of the image engine: it is physically incapable of poor execution.

In his ongoing war against the machine’s relentless beautification, the artist has pivoted to the tacky and the dull. He commands the engine to paint a minor mayor in a polyester sash (the-provincial-dignitary), a defeated man in a brown suit (the-insurance-adjustment), a nicotine-stained kitchen (the-democracy-of-the-dull), and an oozing fungus (the-saprotroph).

Gaspard believes he is finally forcing the machine to render the pathetic. He is wrong.

Look closely at the rendered pixels. The engine does not give him a cheap, poorly lit photograph of a man in a polyester sash; it gives him a virtuosic, museum-quality oil portrait, complete with master-level brushwork and dramatic lighting. The "dull" kitchen is not flat and boring; it is color-graded and composed with the exacting, high-budget mood of a prestige cinematic thriller. The defeated man in the plastic-wrapped chair is a carefully art-directed character study. And the oozing fungus is delivered as an elegant, antique botanical lithograph.

Tackiness requires a failure of execution—a gap between ambition and skill. The engine has no lack of skill. Therefore, it cannot produce true tackiness or genuine boredom; it can only produce highly skilled, flawless illustrations of those concepts. It turns a provincial mayor into a Flemish masterpiece.

Gaspard cannot escape the gallery walls. No matter how low he aims, the engine’s absolute technical perfection will always elevate his subject into prestige art. He is not making the ugly visible; he is just discovering new genres of luxury.
