Unlike auto-discoverable buses like PCI, modern System-on-Chip platforms are silent about their own topology. The operating system kernel boots entirely blind. To know where its own peripherals, interrupts, and clocks are located, it must be handed a Devicetree—a compiled blueprint of its own physical layout—by the bootloader before it can even begin to sense the world.
