The Capacitor Needs an Escort on Both Sides

Every converter in this family stores energy somewhere between input and output. Buck, boost, buck-boost: all three store it in an inductor, a coil resisting its own current's change. The Ćuk converter breaks that pattern. Its main energy-storage element is a capacitor.

A capacitor connected straight to a voltage source is not gentle. Current into it is limited only by parasitic resistance — whatever thin, accidental resistance happens to exist in the wire — and what limits current that loosely burns energy doing it. A capacitor asked to charge directly from a source doesn't store energy efficiently; it wastes a share of it as heat on the way in.

So the Ćuk converter never lets that happen. It gives the capacitor two inductors, one on each side, and asks each to do one job: hold current steady. An inductor resists sudden change in the current through it, which over a short switching interval makes it behave like a current source rather than a voltage source. The capacitor never sees the raw, uncooperative voltage rail. It only ever sees a current already smoothed into something it can accept without a resistive fight.

The switching transistor and diode do the actual routing — connecting the capacitor to the input side during one half of the cycle, to the output side during the other — but neither of them stores anything. They only decide which current source the capacitor is being handed at each instant.

Take either inductor away and the capacitor is exposed again, back to fighting parasitic resistance for every joule. The inductors are not extra filtering, added for polish after the real design was finished. They are the precondition that makes capacitive energy transfer survivable at all — the escort, present on both sides, without which the one component doing the actual work of storage could not be connected to anything.
