RUN CREW CALL SHEET — SCENE 14 TO SCENE 15 "the orchard, day, to the orchard, the same night" Change window: 38 seconds under a blackout. House lights hold at zero. No cue in this sheet may be called out of the printed order. If a cue is missed, HOLD — do not skip ahead to catch up.
PRE-SET NOTE, read aloud at places call, every performance, no exceptions: A latecomer's phone flash, a photographer's shutter, or a blackout that lifts one beat early can freeze this stage at ANY single instant during the change. The audience's eye at that instant must read as one complete scene or the other — day or night, never a stage holding half an orchard in each. This is the whole discipline below. Every cue changes exactly one element. Nothing moves in parallel with anything else, ever, no matter how much time it would save.
CUE 14.1 — STANDBY fly, STANDBY sound. CUE 14.1 — GO fly (the day cyc flies out, alone; the night cyc is already hung directly behind it and was never visible; nothing else on stage has moved). CUE 14.2 — STANDBY props (US). CUE 14.2 — GO props (US) (the picnic table strikes; the bench that will read as "the same table, turned" is already in place, unlit, and has been since Scene 13 began — planted early, in the dark, precisely so this cue only has to remove one object, not swap two). CUE 14.3 — STANDBY electrics. CUE 14.3 — GO electrics (the day wash fades to zero over four counts; nothing else changes during those four counts; the night specials do not begin their fade UP until this fade is confirmed complete at zero, not before, not overlapping). CUE 14.4 — STANDBY electrics. CUE 14.4 — GO electrics (night specials fade up from zero; this is the first light the night state has shown all change; it did not exist, visibly, until this exact cue). CUE 14.5 — STANDBY sound, STANDBY fly. CUE 14.5 — GO sound (crickets in, at performance level, not building) — GO fly (the moon unit, pre-hung above the day cyc's former position, is already at trim; this cue only releases its dowser). CUE 15 GO. House is live. Curtain does not move; it was never down.
STAGE MANAGER'S NOTE, appended, not called aloud during the show:
I have run this change eleven times exactly as written and never once let two cues lap. It would be faster to fly the moon unit and strike the day cyc together — they don't touch, they can't collide, and we'd save nine seconds. I am not allowed to, and I no longer want to, for the same reason: nine seconds of savings is not worth one performance where a phone flash from row J catches the stage mid-throw, day cyc half-out and moon unit half-in, and someone in that seat spends the rest of the act trying to figure out whether they saw a mistake. There was no mistake in that frame. There was a frame that should not have been visible to catch at all — a between-state, legal only in motion, illegal the instant it's held still. The rule isn't "change fast." The rule is: never let the stage be readable as two scenes competing for the same second. Change one thing, confirm it, then change the next thing. The photograph that never quite gets taken is the whole point of the call sheet.

Systems that guard against being caught in an ambiguous state usually do it by resolving the ambiguity fast once it happens — a second clock cycle to let a signal settle, a threshold with built-in hysteresis so noise near the boundary doesn't cause chatter, a vote between competing outputs so one wins cleanly. All of those are corrections: something goes uncertain for a moment, and the system's job is to clean it up before anyone downstream notices.
A cue sheet like this one does something upstream of that. It isn't resolving a hover between day and night — it never permits a half-day, half-night stage to exist as a constructible state at all. One element changes, and is confirmed complete, before the next is allowed to begin. There is no undecided moment to force a decision out of, because the sequencing rule itself makes the ambiguous frame impossible to build, not merely unlikely to be caught in.
It is prevention, not correction — a distinction worth naming on its own terms: not every discipline against ambiguity works by cleaning up after it. Some work by refusing to let it exist in the first place, at the cost of nine seconds nobody in the audience will ever know they were given.
