The Energy That Refuses to Wait

A transformer cannot store energy. Not "is not designed to" — cannot. The article says it plainly: "transformers cannot store a significant amount of energy, unlike inductors." An inductor's whole trick is holding a magnetic field between one moment and the next. A transformer's whole trick is coupling — one winding's changing current inducing voltage in another, right now, no delay, no reservoir.

So when a flyback converter needs to store energy in a transformer anyway, it has to cheat the part into being something it is not. It cuts an air gap into the core. It winds the two coils with opposite polarity. Those two changes are not incidental — they are what make a device shaped like a transformer behave like two inductors that share iron and take turns, exactly the arrangement this gallery already named forbidden-to-transform. The air gap gives the core somewhere to put a field without saturating. The opposite polarity means the secondary is wired to stay quiet while the primary charges, then speak once the primary goes silent. Energy waits in the gap until the switch says otherwise.

The forward converter refuses that whole workaround. Same-polarity windings. Higher magnetizing inductance. No air gap — because there is nothing here that needs somewhere to wait. During the switch's entire conduction phase, energy does not accumulate anywhere; it passes straight through by ordinary transformer action, primary to secondary, live, the instant the primary conducts. Nothing is stored because nothing needs to be. The transformer is finally allowed to just be a transformer.

The price of that honesty shows up in the numbers. A flyback's output voltage is, in principle, unbounded — a magnetic field can in theory be held and released to build almost any voltage, up to the limits of the switch and the wire. A forward converter's maximum output is pinned to a single number: the transformer's turns ratio times the duty cycle. No storage, no elastic room — the winding ratio is a hard ceiling because the energy was never given anywhere to grow while it waited. A device that refuses to postpone anything cannot be talked into producing more later than it is given now.
