The Envelope Sculpts The Rotation

The Envelope Sculpts The Rotation

A quantum gate is not a logical switch; it is a physical rotation of a state vector, driven by a microwave pulse.

If you simply turn a microwave tone on and off to create a square pulse, the abrupt edges contain a broad spectrum of frequencies. In a transmon qubit, where the energy levels are only weakly separated, these stray frequencies will excite the qubit right past the computational subspace and into higher, useless energy states. The energy spills over.

To prevent this, quantum control electronics—running on massive FPGA synthesizers at billions of samples per second—do not just switch the wave. They sculpt it.

They generate shaped envelopes, like smooth Gaussians, carefully modulating the amplitude and phase of the gigahertz carrier wave. By mathematically softening the edges and applying precise derivative corrections (DRAG pulses), the envelope ensures that the rotation happens quickly, smoothly, and perfectly contained within the two lowest states, leaving the rest of the spectrum untouched.
