The Flatness Protects the State

the-flatness-protects-the-state

Early superconducting qubits were violently sensitive to microscopic fluctuations in electrical charge; the slightest noise would destroy their delicate quantum state. The Transmon qubit solves this not by eliminating the noise, but by ignoring it. By adding a massive shunting capacitor, engineers artificially flatten the qubit’s energy bands. The charge noise still rages, but the qubit now rests on a vast, featureless plateau where horizontal movement costs no energy. The state is protected precisely because the landscape has been rendered perfectly dull.
