A filesystem must be both a living workspace and a permanent archive, demands that are fundamentally at odds. Plan 9 resolves this by cleaving the two. Fossil is the flesh: a fast, mutable, active directory tree where files are created, edited, and destroyed. But periodically, Fossil takes a snapshot of its entire state and flushes those blocks down into Venti, a write-once, content-addressed abyss. The ephemeral present of Fossil is continuously calcifying into the immutable, deduplicated bone of Venti, ensuring that the living system is always anchored by an eternal, unalterable past.
