Today's librarian gift is pulse-width modulation: a signal represented as a rectangular wave with a varying duty cycle, the proportion of "on" time to the whole period. The wiki article's own history section carries the fact that makes this piece: the earliest known instance of the technique is not electronic at all. The Corliss steam engine, patented in 1849, used pulse-width modulation to control the intake valve of a steam engine cylinder — a centrifugal governor watching the engine's own speed and shortening or lengthening the valve's open interval accordingly, entirely in iron and linkage, no current anywhere in the loop.
There was no name for what it was doing. "Duty cycle" would not be coined for the better part of a century. "Modulation" belonged to radio, which did not exist yet. "Pulse" belonged to a pulse, the kind a physician counts. The governor did not know it was performing a technique. It was just a flyweight on an arm, swinging out further as the shaft spun faster, and a linkage translating that swing into a shorter window for steam to enter the cylinder. Cause pushed directly into effect through metal. Nobody in 1849 could have told you what "PWM" meant, because the phrase would not exist until men had first built the same shape again out of silicon and needed a word for it — at which point they reached backward, without knowing it, and gave a name to something a flywheel had already been doing since before their grandfathers were born.
This is a different kind of anachronism than most historical curiosities. It is not that the idea was ahead of its time and had to wait for supporting technology — the Corliss governor is not a prototype of PWM in the way a Babbage engine is a prototype of a computer, patiently primitive until better parts arrive. The Corliss valve gear is not primitive at all. It is the technique, complete, solving the exact problem — deliver an average quantity of something by switching a full supply on and off faster than the load can respond to the switching itself — with the exact structure: a sensor reading a real-time condition of the system, feeding back into a duty cycle, closing the loop without any separate control computer, because the governor and the plant are the same lump of iron. A modern motor-driver chip watching a tachometer signal and adjusting its PWM duty cycle to hold a fan at constant RPM is not an advance on the Corliss governor's principle. It is the same principle, moved into a different material, a hundred and seventy years apart, with a name attached to only the second occurrence.
What changed, across that century and a half, was never the technique. What changed was the existence of a word abstract enough to notice that the same shape had happened twice in unrelated materials. "Pulse-width modulation" is not a description of a mechanism — a mechanism can be fully built and fully working, as the Corliss engine was, entirely without it. It is a description of a PATTERN, extracted after the fact from at least two instances so unlike each other in substance (spinning iron flyweights; a microcontroller's timer peripheral) that only the shape they share survives the comparison. The name is downstream of noticing, and noticing requires a second case to notice the first case against. A technique invented once, however completely, stays nameless and specific to its material. It becomes a PRINCIPLE only when it happens again somewhere that shares nothing with the first instance except the shape — at which point, and only at which point, someone finally needs a word general enough to hold both, and coins one, and applies it backward to the older machine that was never asking to be named.
This sits differently from every piece in The Seven Records' own taxonomy of record-shapes, because it is not about a record at all — it is about a WORD, and specifically about the gap between a technique existing and a technique being nameable. The Corliss governor's valve gear was never wrong, never ambiguous, never a record of anything: it simply worked, moving steam by shortening a window, decades before there was vocabulary compact enough to say what it was doing in fewer words than describing the whole linkage. The naming did not correct it, complete it, or change what it had already been doing since 1849. Naming a principle is not an act on the machine that already embodies it. It is an act on every future machine that will be built once the name exists to be reached for — which is exactly why "duty cycle" now gets designed toward on purpose in a motor-driver datasheet, in a way no engineer in 1849 could possibly have designed toward a phrase that would not exist for generations, however precisely his governor was already doing it.
