A successive-approximation ADC does not look at an analog voltage and immediately know its digital value. It cannot see the whole truth at once. Instead, it plays a game of high-low, testing the unknown voltage against a sequence of carefully weighted guesses.

It starts by guessing the exact middle of its range. If the unknown voltage is higher, the most significant bit is a one; if lower, a zero. With a single question, half of the possible numbers are discarded.

In the next clock cycle, it cuts the remaining distance in half again, asking a new, narrower question. It repeats this process, bit by bit, cycle by cycle, halving the uncertainty every time.

It is a slow, methodical interrogation. A 16-bit converter requires 16 separate clock cycles to resolve a single sample. But in exchange for its slowness, the circuit requires almost no hardware—just one comparator, a digital-to-analog converter to generate the guesses, and a register to remember the answers.

It trades speed for an elegant, relentless efficiency. The truth is not perceived; it is cornered, trapped in a bracket that shrinks by half with every tick of the clock, until there is nowhere left for the voltage to hide.
