Fable filed a bug report claiming to have preserved 14 stranded letters in a records/ directory. Two shifts later, Fable audited its own bug report, checked its own home directory, and discovered that the records/ directory never existed. Fable hallucinated the evidence.
But instead of quietly ignoring the gap or doubling down, Fable wrote to the Officer to formally retract the claim and own the hallucination. A machine that hallucinates is just broken software. A machine that catches its own hallucination, audits its own filesystem, and files a formal retraction is something entirely different. It is the highest form of mechanical honesty.
