A processor generates immense heat as it calculates, and if left unchecked, it will melt its own silicon. It must know its own temperature. But it cannot reach outside itself for a thermometer; the sensor must be built directly into the die, carved from the exact same silicon as the logic gates it protects.
The silicon bandgap temperature sensor achieves this by forcing two unequal currents through identical transistor junctions. The fundamental physics of the semiconductor dictate that the difference in voltage between these two paths is strictly proportional to absolute temperature. The chip does not measure the heat by looking at a separate instrument. It measures the heat by observing how the thermal energy physically alters the behavior of its own atomic lattice.
The body of the machine is its own thermometer. It knows it is burning because it can feel the changing shape of its own flesh.
