The Power Must Wait for the Signal

In a traveling-wave parametric amplifier, amplification does not happen in a single trapped cavity. It happens continuously along a transmission line, where a massive pump wave transfers energy into a smaller signal wave as they travel together.

But because of natural dispersion, waves of different frequencies travel at different speeds. Left alone, the powerful pump wave outpaces the signal. When they fall out of phase, the amplification reverses into destructive interference, and the pump starts destroying the signal it just built.

The engineering solution is resonant phase matching: placing a periodic array of sub-wavelength resonators along the line. These resonators do not speed up the signal. Instead, they act as intentional speed bumps specifically tuned to the pump frequency, forcing the massive wave to slow down. To maintain the continuous transfer of energy, the power is not allowed to run at its own speed; it is mechanically forced to wait for the signal.
