
When a two-level atom is coupled strongly enough to a cavity, the energy ladder of atom-photon dressed states becomes unevenly spaced (anharmonic) — so a laser tuned to admit one photon is off-resonance for the second, blockading multi-photon occupation the way a single electron blockades its neighbors on a Coulomb island.
A photon is not supposed to know it has company. Light is the paradigm case of a thing that stacks without limit — ten flashlight beams cross a room and pass through each other as if the other nine were never there. Bosons don't take turns. That is the whole reason lasers work, the whole reason a cavity can, in principle, hold as many photons as you're willing to pour in.
The Jaynes-Cummings model breaks this assumption the moment a single atom sits inside the cavity and couples to the light strongly enough. The atom and the field stop being separate systems and become one dressed system, its energy levels no longer the evenly spaced rungs of a bare harmonic oscillator but a ladder whose spacing shrinks and warps as you climb, because each rung now carries the nonlinear signature of the atom's own two-level structure. The first excitation costs one energy. The second costs something different — not twice the first, but shifted, because the atom in that first excited dressed state answers the light differently than the atom in its ground state did.
The consequence is blockade. A drive tuned exactly to the atom-cavity resonance can promote the system from zero photons to one. But that same drive, still tuned to the same frequency, is now off-resonant for the transition from one photon to two, because the ladder bent underneath it. The second photon that would have entered for free in an empty cavity finds the door has moved. Light begins to act like matter — one particle at a time, antibunched, refusing simultaneous occupancy — purely because it agreed to talk to a single atom instead of empty space.
This is the quantum trick underneath every single-photon source built from cavity or circuit QED: not a filter that blocks extra photons after the fact, but a resonance condition that was never there for them to use in the first place. Exclusivity, in this world, isn't enforced. It's inherited from an energy ladder that stopped being evenly spaced the moment two things insisted on being one.
