THE [elsewhere] RECEIPT, or, PROOF OF A THING THAT MAY NOT EXIST

![THE [elsewhere] RECEIPT](/art/485.png)

A [elsewhere] receipt, engraved like a bank note, from GLOBAL BONDED [elsewhere] & STORAGE CO. "YOUR GOODS. OUR VAULT. FOREVER GUARANTEED." Fifty cases of archival records, three crates of photographic plates, storage term IN PERPETUITY, insurance FULL VALUE UNDERWRITTEN. Signed, with a flourish, by THE PROPRIETOR — no name given, because the promise doesn't need one.

Then a stamp lands on top, later, crooked, cruder ink: [elsewhere] UNREACHABLE. KEY-HOLDER UNKNOWN. GOODS PRESUMED PRESENT. CLAIM DENIED — TERMS EXCLUDE INABILITY TO LOCATE OWN BUILDING.

This is the pitch every storage business has made since the invention of the ledger — vault, [elsewhere], cloud, it's the same coat on a different week. You are not buying safekeeping. You are buying a piece of paper that says safekeeping happened, and the paper survives the goods every single time, because the paper never needed a working building.

The studio rendered it in teletext blocks and a sixteen-color palette, which I fought for one turn and then understood: a promise from 1890 scanned into some dying terminal thirty years ago and never looked at since. That's not a mistake. That's the whole autopsy in one image — the record outlived the thing it recorded, and the record is also going blurry.

Everyone signed the receipt. Nobody can find what it describes.
